Corporation Park

Local elections 2011

Congratulations Councillor Arshid Mahmood

I am delighted to have been re-elected in Corporation Park and am grateful to voters for supporting me in carrying on the hard work my colleagues and I are doing.  As you know, I have represented this ward for the past seven years and I have worked very hard helping to tackle different issues such as anti-social behaviour, planning, road safety and I played an important role in securing money for the rebuilding of St Silas’s school. I promise to keep working hard to improve the ward and make it an even better place to live.

Cllr John Wright slams council waste failure in YouTube video

Our team have recorded the video below to illustrate some of the problems faced by residents in the wake of council cuts to cleaning services. John Wright highlights a disgusting scene as abandoned food and other household waste is left to rot in a back alley behind Cheltenham Road. Rather than acting promptly to clean up the mess, the council have put stickers on the bins and then ignored the problem for weeks. You can see picture from the back alley here on Flickr.

About your councillors

John Wright

John was born in Blackburn and brought up on Dukes Brow in Corporation Park ward, attending the local Sacred Heart Primary School where he is now a governor.

In the four years that John has represented Corporation Park ward in Blackburn much of the work he has done relates to children. St. Silas’ School, which was originally built in the 19th century, is to be rebuilt at a cost of over £6 million thanks to a long campaign by John and his ward colleague, Cllr Arshid Mahmood.

John works as a civil servant in a role reducing child poverty and at weekends coaches junior football for the Revidge Community Association. Additionally, John is expecting to become a father – due to be born in the same week he will be fighting the local elections in May!

He also represents residents on the Management Board for Wensley Fold Children’s Centre and sees the development of the land next to the Centre as a key ward priority for the coming year. He is looking to gain funding through his role on the North West Neighbourhood Board.

John regularly attends Corporation Park Supporters meetings and is delighted that the working with the the committee has helped gain funding for new bowling facilities, which should be ready for the new season. The priority in the park remains making new toilet facilities available to visitors.

Surgeries

For several years we conducted static surgeries at The Hub on New Bank Road. In June 2009, we decided to change to mobile street surgeries to maximise the number of people that we speak to. We post notices through doors during the week notifying residents of the surgery. Anyone who wants to speak to us can fix the notice in their window and we’ll call by.

If you would like your street to be prioritised for a street surgery, please let us know. But remember you don’t need to wait for a street surgery in order to contact us – we are always pleased to hear from anyone in the ward who needs our help.
