Shear Brow

Shiraj Vali – your 2015 Shear Brow Labour Councillor

I feel privileged to have been selected as your Labour candidate for the local election in May

2015. Many of you will know that I was born and raised in the Shear Brow ward and therefore feel

very passionate about the welfare of its people and the community in general. In my professional

capacity, I currently work as a Management Consultant for a large blue chip organisation, whilst

combining this with active involvement in a range of voluntary work. If I was elected, I will provide a

strong voice to champion the needs of my constituents and will work extremely hard to

secure more strategic outcomes for the ward.

Your Labour team

Cllr Hussain Akhtar

I’m Hussain Akhtar and, as many of you will know, I was the Labour Councillor in Shear Brow ward from 1997 to 2010 when I stood aside because of my wife’s ill-health. Mercifully, she is now much better. I am very well known in the area because I have lived here for 40 years and have always been involved in community activities. I am looking forward to being able to work with ward residents again and to help with the development of good community relations across the whole of the town.

I have been a Labour Party member for many years. The Labour Party is the only Party that represents ordinary people and, over the years, it has made many laws that have been helpful to the Asian community and I am very proud to have been asked to be the Labour Party candidate in Shear Brow again. When I was a Councillor before, I was involved with a major building development at St. Michael and St John’s school as well as a large improvement scheme in Corporation Park. I was also able to help improve road traffic conditions in the area by introducing a zebra crossing on Victoria St and I am currently working with the Deputy Police Commissioner, Ibrahim Master, to make sure that crime in the area is under control.

315_solly_khonatCllr Suleman Khonat

I’m Solly Khonat, Labour councillor for Shear Brow ward in Blackburn. This page gives information about the work I do with my team to improve the ward where we all live.

Solly (short for Suleman) is married with five children and has been a resident in Blackburn for over 30 years. He is fluent in four languages and has been involved in voluntary work for many years, both as a magistrate and Secretary for Blackburn, Darwen and Great Harwood newsagents. In 2002 he was awarded an ‘unsung hero’ award by the Prince of Wales during the Queen’s Golden Jubilee year.
